Sleep Apnea, Autism make headway as Minnesota Ok’s Medical Bill

Since July, obstructive sleep apnea and ASD disorders stand qualified in the list of conditions that are seen to be eligible to be treated with controlled cannabis in Minnesota as per the latest developments.

Sleep Apnea and Autism Policies

Petitioners had sought authority interventions for 10 more conditions including dementia, autism, apnea, Parkinson’s disease and liver disease.

Interestingly, the two conditions, Autism and Apnea, were chosen during the department’s regular reviews.

Health officials from the state further backed the use of cannabis for autism after observing the results of “lack of proper drug treatments and reviewing the potential side effects of the present drug-induced treatments and evidence present about autistic Minnesota children already being administered cannabis due to its beneficial effects as one of the major qualifying conditions.”

Dr. Ed Ehlinger explains, “Policy decisions involving substances such as cannabis are difficult when there is a lack of proper scientific evidence. Nevertheless, due to the growing demands for its potential benefits, particularly to those who have been diagnosed with autism, the policy has made its way.”

Autism disorder is seen to be characterized by a triad of symptoms, including but not limited to social impairments resulting in hindrance of effective interactions and communication combined with monotonous behaviors, as well as activities and interests, the department officials explained.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder that involves monotonous episodes of decreased airflow that is caused by a partial or complete collapse of upper airways while sleeping.

The agency further notes during the course of its internal research, “It has identified scientific evidence as well as potential benefits of treatments involving cannabis use.”

Although continuous positive airway pressure treatments are effectively carried out, individuals diagnosed with apnea conditions are often observed to stick with this therapy, notes the department.

Under the present rule, “Patients who have been certified as having obstructive sleep apnea or an autism diagnosis will also be eligible to be enrolled in the newly instated program and be able to receive medical cannabis from the state-run medical cannabis manufacturers commencing the first of August.”

Lawmakers from Minnesota have been known to have taken the strictest steps concerning the use of medical marijuana during the year 2014 and having banned medical cannabis in its plant form.

Additionally, the mandated law includes nine other conditions that would qualify an individual to receive cannabis care while giving authorities additional powers to have other qualifying conditions considered under the programme.

For instance, post-traumatic stress disorder was seen to be one of the conditions making its way to the medical marijuana eligibility list.

A look at the complete list of conditions eligible under the program
